Their friendship may have developed through Brian Heder’s local operation. Both characters are associates of Brian, who runs a boat yard and smuggling business in the Leonida Keys.
Jason works for local drug runners and helps Brian with local shakedowns in exchange for rent-free accommodation. Cal’s exact responsibilities have not been explained, but his access to Coast Guard communications could make him useful to people moving goods through coastal areas.

How Did Cal and Jason Meet?
A release from Rockstar Games failed to elaborate on the game’s depiction of the first meeting of characters Cal and Jason.
This is because both Cal and Jason are connected to Brian Heder. For this reason, the two most plausible explanations for how they became friends are 1) while working at the boat yard or completing odd jobs for local clients as apprentices to Brian Heder, and 2) before Jason moved to Brian’s property to begin his life as a civilian.
There is no indication that Cal shares Jason and Rockstar Games’ Army backstory, nor is there any mentioned of the two characters having a childhood together that Rockstar Games could elaborate on.
We will find out more about the early history of two friends, Cal and Jason, through conversations and early missions in the game. Until then we are strictly speculating as to the two’s first meeting.
Are Cal and Jason Close Friends?
In the game Jason is referred to by Rockstar Games as Cal (Jason’s friend). Within the game however we are given very little information in regards to the relationship of Cal and Jason, as to how close they are to one another.
Cal may be one of the few people Jason trusts before he meets Lucia. This is because Jason’s past is connected to the operation led by Brian. Therefore, Cal can be of help to Jason and tell him more about what went down before.
On the other hand as Jason is plotting his future and takes more and more risks Cal wants to stay in his home for the time being which in itself creates a distance between them.

In associate list for Cal there is a note that links him to fellow associate Brian Heder.
Brian Heder is a middle aged man ( forties ) and is an old hand at smuggling and dealing drugs. He runs his operations from a boat yard in the Leonida Keys. He lets Jason stay at one of his houses down there in exchange for Jason helping him out with the odd job in the local area.
It is unknown to Rockstar whether or not Cal is an associate of Brian and works for him. All that is known is that he is a fellow associate of Brian Heder and more information on him has not been released by Rockstar.
‘Associate’ doesn’t necessarily mean that Rockstar is stating Cal is employed by him in whatever criminal activities he is involved in. The fact that he’s even a criminal associate of Brian is enough for Rockstar to focus on him.
Cal monitoring Coast Guard communications on his radio could also support a coastal smuggling operation by the Brian and his fellow smugglers, as the Coast Guard communications would provide real time information on Coast Guard patrols, emergencies and other activity occurring in the Leonida Keys.
There is no evidence to suggest that Cal is monitoring the Coast Guard communications in order to pass the information on to Brian’s operation. It is more likely that he is monitoring them as part of his normal nature as a suspicious person and that he is simply interested in the communications.

Why Does Cal Monitor Coast Guard Communications?
A statement from Rockstar Games has revealed that in game, Cal is listening to Coast Guard communications whilst he is at home.
We do not know from Rockstar why Cal does this. These scenes are simply presented as scenarios that reflect Cal’s personality, they are not fact.
This could be because he is interested in finding out what is going on around the Leonida coastline and in official radio communications he might find information that confirms his beliefs of strange patterns and suspicious activities of various characters.
Another reason for Cal to listen to the CG communications would be that he has connections to Brian Heder of coastal transportation and smuggling fame. By listening to the communications Cal would have advance information of maritime activity along the Leonida coast, thus enabling people involved in such activities to avoid unwanted surprises.
This information-gathering could also be just another one of Cal’s hobbies – he loves monitoring of emergency services, be it police, fire department or even government communications as a hobby. Rockstar describe Cal’s official role as someone constantly searching for the most obscure, hidden patterns and suspicious events, occurrences – not necessary to have happened or to be proven to exist.
Whichever reason Cal has for monitoring Coast Guard communications, he is going to be very useful to Rockstar. He will be informed of police movements, incidents etc. long before Jason and Lucia hear about them through other channels.
Is Cal Hampton a Conspiracy Theorist?
Yes. From Rockstar’s official character profile for Cal: Cal is the sort of conspiracy nut who figures that large institutions are inherently bad and is inherently suspicious of them. Online information may or may not be true for this character. And he’s of the type to figure that the worst crazies are in control of the biggest and most powerful institutions of society.
This suggests that online info he reads is true for Cal and that there are some very unstable / very dangerous people controlling different organizations in the city.
There is another part of the game where Cal is observing patterns in everyday things and assuming they are suspicious. He is observing the birds in the park flying in perfect synchrony as if they are following a strict plan.
This is the modern form of paranoia. Created by Social Media, Secret groups and online communities (where no one has to prove their real identity) as well as loads of suspicious and unverified information found on videos (YouTube, Twitch, etc).
Again, the behavior of the character Cal has been lifted from real life and then magnified and twisted in order to highlight the many negative effects that modern technology is having upon the human psyche in this Rockstar satirical game. Much like any other online denizen, Cal could spend hours perusing videos on the Internet, as well as going through a multitude of websites and online forums. However, instead of being knowledgeable on many topics, after a while, Cal would declare himself an expert in nearly everything and note down the most bizarre of suspicious patterns within everyday events.
All of the characters in the GTA games are ridiculous to an extreme degree, and yet they always reveal vital pieces of information regarding the main plot. Some of the information that Cal has spread could be 100% incorrect and still accidentally reveal aspects of the larger conspiracy in Leonida regarding Jason and Lucia.
Could Cal’s Theories Be Correct?
For now we can only speculate over whether or not any of the theories put forward by Cal over the game are true, as Rockstar have yet to make any official announcements over the highly anticipated GTA 6 game.
A passing comment by the fictional character in that suspicious Rockstar video seems to be used just to amuse / commentate current affairs (as per typical GTA media). The real story in GTA 6 is that of a massive crime syndicate, involved in an elaborate conspiracy of crime spanning the entire of Leonida.
As such, it is entirely possible that Rockstar continue to portray Cal as the clue finding observer that he is without him realizing it. The oddity of his situation could also stem from other straight-laced characters ignoring the same patterns that Cal notices.
We will have to wait and see whether Cal continues to make the most bizarre of comments for the remainder of the game, or whether he hits upon something that will progress the story.
Whether Cal is mainly an unreliable observer or a new valuable source of information is yet to be seen, and is likely to be somewhere in between.
Cal Hampton’s Personality
Cal appears paranoid, observant, relaxed and strongly independent.
Cal is comfortable with drinks, online browsing, and listening in on conversations from his home. This is to keep his distance and avoid becoming a victim and being in crowded areas.
In general, Rockstar has portrayed Cal as a happy, middle-aged man, completely content with how he chooses to spend his time. He’s a character that’s happy with his life just as it is and doesn’t appear to be embarrassed by anything.
Cal is depicted as a somewhat isolated person, so he would have a great deal of information about life in the Keys. He is very much a behind the scenes type of person and in this event he is not getting involved in criminal activities in order to complete a job, unlike the other events.
He would bring humorous banter with Jason as he further delves into his farfetched theories of those around him and their actions that he notices while he is observing from afar.
In another sense, there is much more to Cal than meets the eye. Whilst behind all of his humor, there is a very intelligent individual who spends a lot of time monitoring various forms of communications for patterns in the communications. It does not matter that his conclusions are sometimes far fetched whilst he is relaxing at home with a drink, browsing the net, listening to music etc.

Cal looks like he’s probably lazy as he’s a home body in Rockstar but he’s never described as that by Rockstar.

I believe Cal is trying to maintain his physical safety in relation to the activities of Brian’s operation. His lack of action is not laziness, rather self-preservation.
Jason is more than happy to do shakedowns, etc for fear of physical harm, whereas Cal wouldn’t want to get involved in that situation in the first place & rather stay at home & observe, then supply Rockstar with information.
Why Does Jason Have Bigger Plans?
This pairing allows for a contrast between the comfort and isolation of Cal’s life and the growing ambition of Jason’s.
Jason works at the airport to avoid occasional encounters with a drug runner. He’s been allowed to stay in his place by Brian Heder, but it’s a very basic setup and offers him no freedom.
Meeting Lucia Caminos may trigger Jason’s ambition. As he first meets her, Lucia is focused on trying to change her life so that she can support herself in a financially secure situation.
Jason and Lucia Caminos get in on what appears to be an easy score, to make a lot of money, the life. But as with Jason before, things go terribly wrong, and they are pulled into a statewide crime ring.
The extent to which Jason’s ambition is fulfilled will be realized by Cal through Jason’s transition from doing small time work in the Keys to more deadly work throughout the rest of Leonida.
This is likely to be very disturbing for both men. Either Cal will point out to Jason how dangerous he is being or Jason will detest Cal for not having any ambition and for not wishing to become involved in the bigger plans for making lots of money.
Likewise, Jason will no doubt turn to Cal when his big plans begin to fall apart.

In games such as Red Dead Redemption: The Complete Edition from Rockstar Games, we are still waiting for more information on the home address of Cal Hampton
I have no information about the home of Cal Hampton but based on the information provided about his connection to Jason and Brian it’s likely he resides in the Leonida Keys or somewhere close to the location where the video was shot by Rockstar games promoting the game which shows Cal relaxing in a home/residence next to a swimming pool.
No street, town or property has been named by Rockstar officialy.
So in effect Cal lives close to the boat yard where Brian is running the operation, he’s fully connected to what’s going on but not really involved in the operation that poses the greatest risk to the characters.
His home would make for a good early game location. This is just pure speculation until Rockstar elaborate on the game play.
