GTA 6 Port Gellhorn Compared With Sandy Shores: Motels, Railways, Nightlife and Town Size

Last updated: August 8, 2026

Port Gellhorn vs. Sandy Shores: A Grand Theft Auto Town Comparison.

The two regional Grand Theft Auto towns are Sandy Shores, a rural area in Blaine County of Grand Theft Auto V, and Port Gellhorn, a coastal region confirmed for Grand Theft Auto VI, the upcoming sixth installment of the popular Grand Theft Auto franchise by Rockstar Games.

Port Gellhorn is depicted as an abandoned tourist destination in the state of Leonida. It features images showcasing its fallen infrastructure, including old motels and abandoned buildings, as well as bars, clubs, and industrial remnants like railways and factories. The atmosphere reflects a once-thriving destination now left to decay, with signs of life limited to individuals congregating in the parking lots of deserted restaurants and garages along the roads.

Both environments showcase players two very different views of the Grand Theft Auto VI and Grand Theft Auto V States, two very different states that are economically and culturally miles apart from the main city of Los Santos in the two games.

Unlike Sandy Shores, situated in a dry desert and bordered by the Alamo Sea, Port Gellhorn is a coastal town in a wetter region. Its development caters to tourists who enjoy the nightlife at various venues. The town’s hotels and motels are spread throughout, with a commercial area filled with shops, restaurants, and bars. The atmosphere is lively, with people gathering in parking lots and along the roads. Much of Port Gellhorn’s identity revolves around the train service and the myriad of industries nearby.

What Is Port Gellhorn in GTA 6?

Port Gellhorn is a key location within GTA 6’s fictional state of Leonida, characterized by its ageing motels and declining tourism infrastructure.

Rockstar presents the area as a place that once benefited from tourism but has experienced decline. Its streets contain ageing motels, faded roadside attractions, underused commercial properties and businesses serving people who continue to live and travel through the region.

The result is a location that appears very different from Vice City.

Vice City is filled with beaches, hotels, expensive property, crowded nightlife and modern towers. Port Gellhorn appears older, less polished and more dependent on regional traffic and local businesses.

Official imagery shows several recognizable features:

  • Starlet Motel
  • Delights Cabaret
  • Railway station and tracks
  • Industrial structures
  • Water tower
  • Parking lots
  • Roadside businesses
  • Older commercial development
  • Coastal and industrial scenery

Rockstar has released five dedicated Port Gellhorn screenshots, suggesting that the town and its surroundings will be an important part of the wider Leonida map.

What Is Sandy Shores in GTA 5?

Sandy Shores is a rural desert community in Blaine County, located beside the Alamo Sea.

The town is one of GTA 5’s strongest contrasts with Los Santos. Instead of high-rise offices, expensive homes and heavily populated urban roads, Sandy Shores contains small buildings, trailers, dusty streets and wide stretches of open desert.

The surrounding region includes:

  • Alamo Sea shoreline
  • Desert roads
  • Trailer communities
  • Small shops and service businesses
  • An airfield
  • Industrial sites
  • Off-road terrain
  • Nearby mountains and desert wilderness

Sandy Shores is also closely connected with Trevor Philips, making the town important to GTA 5’s story rather than simply another small settlement.

Its isolated atmosphere helps establish the difference between Trevor’s life and the more urban lifestyles of Michael and Franklin.

Main Difference: Coastal Decline Versus Desert Isolation

The main difference between Port Gellhorn and Sandy Shores is their surrounding environments. Sandy Shores is characterized by the Grand Senora Desert and the Alamo Sea, showcasing dry land and sparse vegetation. In contrast, Port Gellhorn has developed around a wetter coastal area with a history of tourism, leading to distinct visual identities.

Sandy Shores is defined by the Grand Senora Desert and the Alamo Sea. Dry ground, sparse vegetation, dusty roads and distant mountains dominate the landscape.

Port Gellhorn appears to have developed around a wetter coastal environment with heavier infrastructure and a history connected to tourism.

This gives the two towns different visual identities even when both are presented as places outside the wealthiest parts of their states.

Is Port Gellhorn Bigger Than Sandy Shores?

Rockstar has yet to release any official information regarding the physical size of both Sandy Shores and Port Gellhorn.

From what we can see from the official GTA6 screenshots posted online, it seems to me that Port Gellhorn is a more developed area than Sandy Shores. From what I can see from the rail lines, industrial locations and commercial locations in Port Gellhorn it seems a very large area with lots of roads.

However, screenshots cannot provide reliable measurements.

The map of a town can be enormous, yet still be smaller than another. Much of a town can be off limits, and within a town’s boundaries few roads, businesses, and interiors exist.

I reckon that by having a large amount of roadside buildings of a dense construction, Port Gellhorn will actually feel larger than it really is, whereas Sandy Shores is a very spread out, low-density, desert-based town with only a few scattered buildings and long roads through it.

Until we can see the full map of GTA 6 from Rockstar we won’t know any facts about Port Gellhorn compared to Sandy Shores.

Town Density Comparison

The area of Sandy Shores was designed with a lot of space between the buildings.

Intentionally the trailer parks and the shops on the streets of Sandy Shores of the dusty roads are spread out. Quickly then the big desert expands in the wild nature of the undeveloped land.

Port Gellhorn appears more densely developed.

Official game screenshots of Port Gellhorn’s locations show the trailer parks, the desert beyond the end of the streets, the area of the city with the rail system, various motels, bars and clubs, the streets, a couple of industrial structures and all of the parking areas close together.

The presence of all these locations in close proximity to one another will enhance the small-city/large-town feel of Port Gellhorn in stark contrast to the loosely scattered structures and open desert of the undeveloped Sandy Shores region.

We will only know for sure how far the areas devolped by Rockstar extend from the screenshots when the final game is released.

Motels in Port Gellhorn

Motels appear central to Port Gellhorn’s identity.

From the promotional presentation for Rockstar’s upcoming game of an area of Los Santos to be called Port Gellhorn in tourist decline aged motel accommodation etc have been featured.

The Starlet Motel is arguably the most well-known motel to be set in the area of Rockstar’s upcoming game.

The motel is often depicted in the trailers and promotional images for the game, including in scenes that feature the two main characters Jason and Lucia. The motel has become a very recognizable icon of the game and of the region of Port Gellhorn, and is arguably the most familiar part of the area’s landscape for gamers.

Motels could serve several world-building purposes in Port Gellhorn:

  • Temporary accommodation
  • Story meeting locations
  • Roadside landmarks
  • Places showing the town’s tourism history
  • Environmental storytelling

Rockstar has not revealed whether players can freely rent rooms at multiple Port Gellhorn motels or how any accommodation system works.

Sandy Shores Accommodation and Residential Style

Small homes, often in trailer form, are often found on small properties in backstreet lots rather than large motel complexes in Sandy Shores.

Its residential layout reinforces the town’s desert-community identity.

There are lots of dirt, fenced areas between buildings and large areas of open space.

Many of the buildings at Sandy Shores are separated by yards of dirt or are enclosed in backyards with fences. In some cases, the lots are even very large.

Port Gellhorn has the feel of a community from a bygone era of tourism, whereas Sandy Shores is a community of full time residents who live in the desert.

Starlet Motel Compared With Sandy Shores Properties

The Starlet Motel could become one of Port Gellhorn’s defining landmarks in the same way certain homes and properties help define Sandy Shores.

Its neon sign, parking area and ageing architecture immediately communicate the atmosphere of the town.

Sandy Shores’ buildings are generally more strongly connected to desert life, with trailers, dusty yards and utilitarian structures.

This is an important example of Rockstar using architecture to communicate regional history.

Port Gellhorn tells players that tourism once mattered. Sandy Shores tells players that they are far from Los Santos and deep inside Blaine County.

Nightlife in Port Gellhorn

Port Gellhorn is not as prosperous as it once was but it has local nightlife to enjoy.

One of the open venues in Port Gellhorn that was showcased is Delights Cabaret. Delights is showcased under bright signage at night in the game.

This theater is in a completely decayed district like Port Gellhorn and not in a district like Vice City with many fancy nightclubs for the tourists, so it must be active at night in Port Gellhorn.

The atmosphere appears smaller and more local.

Nighttime Port Gellhorn imagery features:

  • Neon business signs
  • Wet streets
  • Parking-lot gatherings
  • Cars around roadside venues
  • Industrial lights in the distance
  • Train activity

The result may be one of GTA 6’s strongest contrasts with central Vice City nightlife.

Sandy Shores Nightlife

The nightlife in the bars of the desert town of Sandy Shores is not given the same visual representation as the nightlife in Port Gellhorn.

However, outside of the town’s bars and meeting places, the desert town becomes a very quiet and dark place at night.

Most of the light is centered around areas with businesses, homes and roads within the town. The huge amount of desert surrounding the town is dark.

Port Gellhorn looks much brighter than the rest of the desert town as commercial signs, the railroad and the concentration of homes and businesses create a vivid nightlife contrast to the rest of the quieter town after dark.

Which Town Has Better Night Atmosphere?

This will ultimately depend on personal preference.

Sandy Shores is a very quite place in the desert, with the lights way off in the distance. It’s got an open sky, and it’s very isolated and solitary.

The images of Port Gellhorn look quite atmospheric too. Neon from billboards and shop signs, wet road surfaces and the lights from the railway all look to make the area look run down and abandoned, an area of commercial decay.

It’s also worth noting that The final GTA 6 lighting and weather systems will also influence how Port Gellhorn feels during normal gameplay. If you want to play as a somewhat more urban oriented environment with detailed environment then Port Gellhorn would be better for you, while an open desert like environment of the kind that Sandy Shores provides and so on would be better for a person who wants to play that.

The final lighting and weather in the game could add to the overall feeling of Port Gellhorn in normal gameplay.

Railway Infrastructure

Confirmed railway features in Port Gellhorn.

Official GTA 6 Screenshot from the GTA 6 Gameplay of the official Railway infrastructure in Port Gellhorn. The Picture shows a train parked on the railway tracks right next to the railway platform with the water tower from the railway. In the background you can see the streets, lights from industries etc.

This would suggest that the trains are important to Port Gellhorn and the area of Leonida that you can travel around in as part of Port Gellhorn’s economy.

Connecting the town to any of the Industrial locations within Leonida would likely be served by the railway, such as Ambrosia or the Northern parts of Leonida bordering Mount Kalaga.

Whether Rockstar will be revealing the full GTA 6 railway map and whether or not fans will be able to use the trains for passenger travel has not been confirmed yet.

Transportation in Sandy Shores

Sandy Shores is primarily a road-based town.

Cars and motorcycles can travel quickly through the settlement before continuing into the surrounding desert.

The nearby airfield also gives the region a strong aviation connection.

Open terrain allows capable vehicles to leave roads and travel directly across sections of the desert.

This makes Sandy Shores easy to approach from several directions rather than forcing players onto a limited number of streets.

Road Networks

Port Gellhorn appears to contain more conventional developed road infrastructure.

Commercial properties, railway crossings, motels and industrial areas may produce a denser network of streets and intersections.

Sandy Shores uses broader open roads alongside smaller residential streets and dirt tracks.

The surrounding desert means players are often not restricted to the road network at all.

This could create an important gameplay difference:

  • Port Gellhorn may reward learning streets and industrial routes
  • Sandy Shores allows greater direct off-road movement

Off-Road Exploration

Off road exploration in Rockstar’s GTA Online is far better in the desert at Sandy Shores than at Port Gellhorn.

The surrounding desert provides a big playground for such traditional off-road motorcycles, trucks etc. to be explored.

For traditional off-road play, Sandy Shores is ideal as it has a vast expanse of dry land, including hills and dirt trails, all to explore by motorcycle or 4-wheeler across all day long without the need to be on the road in a car on actual paved roads.

Outside of the town of Sandy Shores in Port Gellhorn there are lots of dirt routes and rough terrain but so far Rockstar haven’t shown us the rest of the surrounding area.

Of course, as off-road enthusiasts, we will also explore other locations within the vast world of Rockstar’s Leonida. We’ll head on over to Grassrivers and Mount Kalaga National Park for example.

Port Gellhorn’s Coastal Setting

The name for the environment for Port Gellhorn is Leonida, near the coast.

The industrial looking buildings and tall cranes in Port Gellhorn show that it is part of a larger waterfront economy in the region of Leonida.

This could be a key feature for Sandy Shores who have no transportation links currently.

I have yet to see the complete map for the marina or harbour in Port Gellhorn, so I will refrain from commenting on any claims about specific routes that one could take by boat to other locations on the coast of Leonida until then.

These routes could be real but we can’t be sure until the full map is released by Rockstar.

Sandy Shores and the Alamo Sea

Sandy Shores sits beside the Alamo Sea, giving the desert town its own important water landmark.

The lake creates strong visual contrast with the surrounding dry landscape and separates areas of Blaine County.

Unlike Port Gellhorn’s apparent coastal position, the Alamo Sea is an inland body of water.

This distinction changes the surrounding geography.

Port Gellhorn can potentially connect with Leonida’s wider coastline, while Sandy Shores remains surrounded primarily by inland desert and mountains.

Industrial Areas

Port Gellhorn appears to contain significant industrial infrastructure.

Official screenshots of Port Gellhorn provide many clues about the various freight- and industry- related structures such as many cranes, a rail system, water towers etc. all supporting operations and thus employment.

This could be a sector of employment left in Port Gellhorn after the tourism industry collapsed.

Beyond Sandy Shores, in the surrounding desert of the game, there are scattered industrial/ utility-type buildings and structures throughout the rest of the County.

Port Gellhorn must be the focus of a regional center for industry employment in decline with largely tourist-type residences.

Abandoned and Ageing Attractions

Many of the tourist attractions, the stores and other businesses in Port Gellhorn that at various times had huge crowds of tourists these days do not get as many visitors as they once did.

This provides environmental storytelling without requiring lengthy dialogue.

You can see the remnants of old signs, a abandoned car park or two, some of the other buildings slowly falling to pieces as time goes on to highlight the decline of the town to its current state.

The ruins of the long-abandoned Sandy Shores still stand in the world of Red Dead 2 but they tell a completely different story to those crumbling buildings in Port Gellhorn.

Port Gellhorn will most likely be seen as a place with a very visible economic past.

Atmosphere Compared

Both towns are intentionally distant from the polished image of their games’ major cities.

Port Gellhorn contrasts with Vice City’s neon luxury and tourism.

Sandy Shores contrasts with Los Santos’ wealth, entertainment industry and crowded urban life.

The difference is in how they create that contrast.

AtmospherePort GellhornSandy Shores
Visual moodWeathered coastal townDry desert settlement
Night lightingNeon signs, railway and commercial lightingScattered roadside and residential lighting
DevelopmentMotels, strip-style commercial areas and industryTrailers, small stores and scattered properties
SurroundingsCoast and regional infrastructureDesert and Alamo Sea
Main feelingFormer destination past its primeRemote desert community

Population and NPC Density

Sandy Shores is intentionally less populated than Los Santos.

Its sparse population supports the feeling of being far from the city.

Port Gellhorn may contain a larger concentration of pedestrians because its commercial and nightlife areas appear more densely developed.

Official imagery shows groups of residents gathered around cars and businesses.

However, Rockstar has not published a numerical NPC comparison between the two towns.

Population may also vary greatly according to time of day and location.

Weather Effects

Below is an official image of Port Gellhorn from the game.

Also, the rain would make the reflections in the wet surfaces of the road, of the signs of the Motel, of the lights of the train station and of the other shops and stores of the town so much more pronounced.

The sandy shores of the recognizable Sandy Shores of the LA coast in the Grand Theft Auto 5 world of Blaine County would typically be seen during dry desert weather on odd occasions within the world of the game.

It would be even better to see such differences when traveling between the places at night.

Nothing from above has been confirmed by Rockstar regarding Port Gellhorn (hurricane damage, town permanently under water, town being re-built etc).

Raul Bautista and Port Gellhorn

In newly revealed footage from a GTA 6 location, Rockstar Games has officially introduced us to Raul Bautista.

Raul Bautista is a seasoned thief that is looking for a team of players to join in order to pull off very risky heists and earn large sums of money.

This also helps to further develop the identity of the town of Port Gellhorn.

We are sure that the town and its surroundings will be able to offer the right contacts and meeting points for a story like that of Raul. However as of yet we have not been informed of the location of his headquarters.

In summary for Raul Bautista – His association has added to the confirmation of the Port Gellhorn location of which location material was released by Rockstar as part of the location material for the soon to be released open world game GTA 6 and also as to where he lives or operates to help facilitate the playing of the game. Note – Raul Bautista’s confirmed link to Port Gellhorn as part of the released material for the location for the game as opposed to where he lives and how he operates.

Trevor Philips and Sandy Shores

Sandy Shores has a lot more connection to the 3 main protaginists of GTA 5 then the other locations in the map. Trevor Philips the second protaginist lives in Sandy Shores during the time of the game.

Trevor’s hideouts in the town of Sandy Shores show us to some degree of how Trevor lives before his story becomes intertwined with that of Michael and Franklin in Los Santos.

This in contrast to the scenery of Sandy Shores which functions because Trevor lives there and so is the home territory of one of the three protagonists in the game prior to the main story and their connection to the other two in Los Santos.

Port Gellhorn could become as important to Jason and Lucia as Sandy Shores is to Trevor but until then it’s not confirmed that either of the two protagonists live there permanently.

Jason and Lucia in Port Gellhorn

Port Gellhorn, another place of GTA 6 promotion.

The Starlet Motel is notable in this context as it was one of the locations showcased with Jason and Lucia in a piece of promotional artwork for the game.

The appearance of Port Gellhorn in this visual may suggest that the Port is a place that Jason and Lucia travel to in their wandering of the world of GTA 6’s Leonida.

However, the exact timeline remains unknown.

We don’t know anything about the Starlet Motel in terms of its involvement in the main game. Whether or not it is a safehouse and if it is permanent or used for just a short time in the game is unknown.

Story Importance Comparison

Sandy Shores is essential to GTA 5’s story because of Trevor’s home and several important early events.

Port Gellhorn’s full story importance remains unrevealed, but several clues suggest it will be more than an optional roadside town.

These include:

  • Five dedicated official screenshots
  • A dedicated Rockstar location presentation
  • Prominent motel imagery
  • Raul Bautista’s association
  • Railway and industrial infrastructure
  • Multiple visible businesses and gathering locations

The complete campaign will reveal whether Port Gellhorn receives as much narrative attention as Sandy Shores did through Trevor.

Port Gellhorn Compared With Vice City

Port Gellhorn is likely strongest as an antithesis to Vice City.

Vice City represents the current Leonida style of tourism: a pricey, trendy resort with high-end real estate, fantastic beaches, and top-class nightclubs. It is home to a large number of multinational companies.

Port Gellhorn represents a part of the state where the older structures of tourism have been losing value.

This contrast makes Leonida a complete State, not just an enormous city surrounded by nothing.

Read our complete GTA 6 Vice City guide.

Sandy Shores Compared With Los Santos

Sandy Shores performs a similar contrast in GTA 5.

Los Santos contains skyscrapers, expensive neighbourhoods, crowded freeways and entertainment businesses.

Sandy Shores is smaller, quieter and surrounded by desert.

The difference becomes particularly important when GTA 5 introduces Trevor after players have already spent time experiencing Michael and Franklin’s lives in Los Santos.

Which Town Will Be More Interesting to Explore?

Sandy Shores offers freedom through open terrain.

The open terrain of the desert allows for fast travel between Sandy Shores and the surrounding countryside, including travel around the Alamo Sea and into the mountains of the rest of the state.

Port Gellhorn may be a lot more dense in town than what we currently see with landmarks of motels, the railway, older commercial areas and nightlife.

Motels, the railway, the old commercial quarters and the bars and clubs of the town’s night life to make the town as individually colorful as possible within the boundaries of a small area.

So while Port Gellhorn will be a town to explore street by street, Sandy Shores will be a place to play as you travel between the town and the rest of the surrounding landscape.

Interior Access

So far Rockstar have shown quite a few interiors for GTA 6 through trailers and also in game screenshots. But as of yet, there is no official list of interiors for all the buildings in Port Gellhorn that the player can enter.

Motels, local shops and also the nightlife locations within Port Gellhorn would have to have individual interiors within the buildings and not every building would have to be entered.

The town of Sandy Shores in the GTA 5 has several Story interiors of which are accessible as well as some commercial interiors, but a lot of the other buildings are locked as well.

Adding more interiors to the buildings of Port Gellhorn even if they are not accessible could make the town feel a lot larger than it actually is. In reality the town probably isn’t going to be that much larger than Vice City, just a lot more dense.

Could Port Gellhorn Have More Activities?

Rockstar has not announced a complete Port Gellhorn activity list.

The environment could support regional activities connected to:

  • Driving
  • Motels
  • Railway areas
  • Local entertainment
  • Exploration
  • Regional characters

Specific activity systems should not be treated as confirmed until Rockstar demonstrates them.

Sandy Shores has accumulated many activities through GTA 5 and years of GTA Online updates, so comparing the completed GTA 5 ecosystem with an unreleased GTA 6 location requires caution.

Could Port Gellhorn Become GTA 6’s Sandy Shores?

Port Gellhorn may fill a similar broad narrative role, but it is not a direct recreation of Sandy Shores.

Both locations provide:

  • A major regional contrast with the main city
  • Ageing or modest businesses
  • Distinctive local residents
  • Roadside environments
  • A connection to important characters
  • Opportunities for missions away from the urban centre

The geography is completely different, however.

Sandy Shores is built around desert isolation. Port Gellhorn appears shaped by coastal decline, tourism history and heavier regional infrastructure.

Which Town Feels More Realistic?

Both use different forms of recognizable American regional design.

Sandy Shores exaggerates small desert communities found in the American Southwest and inland Southern California.

Port Gellhorn appears inspired by ageing Florida-style coastal communities where old tourism businesses, motels and newer local economies exist beside each other.

Rockstar typically combines several real-world locations rather than recreating one town exactly.

Port Gellhorn should therefore be treated as a fictional Leonida destination rather than a direct one-to-one version of a single Florida city.

Which Town Could Feel Larger?

Port Gellhorn may feel larger because of density and infrastructure.

Sandy Shores spreads a limited number of buildings across a broad desert area.

Port Gellhorn appears to contain more tightly packed commercial and transportation infrastructure.

However, travelling around Sandy Shores includes the surrounding Alamo Sea and desert, making its practical exploration area much larger than the central town boundary.

The same may be true for Port Gellhorn once its coastline and outskirts are revealed.

No official measurement currently resolves the comparison.

Final Thoughts

Port Gellhorn and Sandy Shores both give Grand Theft Auto players a world beyond the polished image of the main city.

Sandy Shores is defined by desert isolation. Trailers, dusty roads, open terrain, the Alamo Sea and nearby aviation facilities make it one of GTA 5’s most recognizable rural communities.

Port Gellhorn appears to take a different approach. It is a coastal destination shaped by ageing tourism infrastructure, motels, commercial decline, railway activity, local nightlife and industrial development.

The Starlet Motel and railway scenery give Port Gellhorn a distinctive identity, while Raul Bautista’s association suggests that the location may become important to GTA 6’s wider story.

Rockstar has not confirmed that Port Gellhorn is physically larger than Sandy Shores. It does appear more densely built in the currently released media, but screenshots cannot provide reliable measurements.

Sandy Shores remains stronger for open desert and off-road exploration, while Port Gellhorn could provide more street-level landmarks, interiors and regional infrastructure.

The biggest similarity is their role in world building. Both towns remind players that the states surrounding Los Santos and Vice City contain communities with very different lifestyles, economies and environments from their main cities.
