There has been a tonne of survival horror games released since the word was first used to describe Resident Evil’s initial 1996 release. However, titles like 1989’s Sweet Home and 1992’s Alone in the Dark established the standard for what survival horror games should be even before Capcom’s venerable franchise terrified everyone to death. In the growing subgenre of action/adventure games, the games we’re about to salute on this list are the pinnacle of excellence.
The Evil Within
The Evil Within is the best horror game available on the PlayStation 3. The Evil Within pays homage to the survival horror genre’s forerunners, such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, and the over-shoulder camera horror game view is awesomely horrifying as the plot unfolds. However, most contemporary survival horror games understandably choose a first-person perspective.
The Evil Within by horror mastermind Shinji Mikami features some incredibly horrifying creatures, and the constant worry of running out of shotgun shells doesn’t go away until the end credits.
Chernobylite
The most immersive entry on this list might simply be Chernobylite. The first-person survival game from The Farm 51, set in a 3D-scanned replica of the Exclusion Zone at Chornobyl, is dripping with suspense and terror. If exploring a distorted recreation of a notorious nuclear power facility isn’t enough to pique your interest, perhaps the game’s RPG features and the non-linear plot will. In either case, there isn’t much like being thrust into the Chernobylite universe.
Tormented Souls
Specifically, the first Resident Evil and early Alone in the Dark titles, Tormented Souls is a survival horror game inspired by venerable series like Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark. Tormented Souls’ goal is to modernize the elements that made those classic survival horror games so amazing, and it succeeds in doing so. Tormented Souls offers a singular blend of nostalgic yet modern gameplay thanks to the combination of the fixed viewpoint gameplay from the past with contemporary controls and cameras. For fans of classic survival horror, Tormented Souls is a must-play.
‘Resident Evil 2’
Gamers left the second Resident Evil fully assured of its enduring excellence because it had just been released into everyone’s hands. Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, two series stalwarts who must travel through a depressed Raccoon City that has been overtaken by various zombies and bioweapons, were first introduced to the world in Resident Evil 2. The added locations offered even more spine-tingling frights (that sewer part will never leave our minds…) and heart-pounding experiences that players would never forget. Many consider this outstanding sequel to be among the best video game sequels ever created.
‘Resident Evil 3: Nemesis’
In the third mainstream installment of the Resident Evil franchise, Jill Valentine makes her welcome comeback. She had to defend herself this time from the walking and crawling monsters that the Umbrella Corporation is in charge of inundating Raccoon City with. The most potent bio-weapon of them all is Nemesis, who introduced an extra degree of paranoia to everything players had to perform in this game. Nemesis appears to be invincible. The Resident Evil model still functioned flawlessly in this game, and its biggest distinguishing features included the ability to build ammo and make split-second decisions that affected the story.
Devour
A co-op survival horror game called Devour was introduced last year. To avoid being dragged to hell by a possessed cult, gamers must stop them. To avoid being captured by cultists, players must cooperate. There is also a single-player mode where players can try to survive alone, albeit it is not recommended for those who are weak of heart. Because each game is unique, there is a tonne of replay value to keep players engaged. Because of how horrifying it manages to be, it has a very high rating on Steam.
Ultimate custom night
A Five Nights at Freddy’s DLC called Ultimate Custom Night was expanded into a full game. Players can select from more than 50 characters from different games in the franchise to compete against in the game. The difficulty of each adversary can also be adjusted by players to suit their preferences. Super fans of Five Nights at Freddy’s should play Ultimate Custom Night. The game is free to play on PC, as well as on consoles and mobile devices.
